Conrad posted this on Twitter, and it's just too good not to re-post.
Back in the 70's, a group of students formed an orchestra called Portsmouth Sinfonia. It was formed of musicians playing instruments completely new to them. They were um, not good. But I suppose that was the whole point, as they performed and released hit singles.
This is their version of "Thus spake Zarathustra" from 2001: A Space Odyssey. Even if you weren't in band or orchestra when you were in school, you can appreciate how hilariously bad this is. Unless, you're, you know, tone deaf.
I really wonder what level of effort went into something that sounds that terrible. They must have only practiced once.
Best. Video. Ever.
Not the whole very serious message about diabetes, but the part with the dog and how calmly he warns the woman that he has rabies.
I can't remember the last time I laughed this hard at an SNL skit:
I know this next video is about a year old, but I just watched it recently. It brings back memories of the girls I went to middle school with, except we call them cholas, not chongas.
You decide.
Today in my Oil Spills class, when my professor mentioned that we would be watching a "pretty old movie," I got worried. This is the class, you understand, where we watch videos from the 70's and early 80's on a weekly basis.
The video, which was probably released when Americans first discovered Technicolor, really got me thinking about American Pop. This was a program about the 50's and 60's that AMC used to air on Saturday nights back when I was in high school (yeah, you can tell how popular I was then). You could always count on a broadcast of these amazing 50's educational videos. And by amazing, I mean unintentionally hilarious.
I found two of the videos of them on Youtube, and it fills my heart with joy (the party one is my favorite-I remember Patrick and I getting hysterical at the "rhythm game.")
The first clip is the promotion for Season 4 of The Office. My favorite is Michael's explanation of what Y Tu Mama Tambien means.
So every year, early February (unlike the late Januarys of my youth), it's Superbowl time. Now, I confess-I watch the Superbowl exclusively for commercials. (Here are two favorites.) In fact, my brother and male friends make fun of me because I can never remember the teams who played in recent years. I couldn't even remember that the Seahawks and Steelers played last year until someone reminded me. I'm amazed how men can recite teams and statistics from games that were years ago. For fun, I asked my brother who played in the Superbowl in 1998, and he started rattling off plays and subsequent matches. It's ok. I can recite Academy Award winners without looking them up and he can't (for example, Best Actress, starting in 1997 to 2005: Helen Hunt, Gwyneth Paltrow, Hilary Swank, Julia Roberts, Halle Berry, Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron, Hilary Swank, and Reese Witherspoon.)
Anyway. So I started watching at the National Anthem (I love Billy Joel and really wished he could do a halftime show). The commercials were just...okay. There were only a handful that I found funny (the Budweiser one "Rock Paper Scissors" ad and yes, the Kevin Federline one). Commercials progressively get worse every year. I know people have been saying that since I was little, but it's true. My brother says I overhype commercials too much. Maybe. But I remember the dot com era producing some terrific commercials. I have no idea why commercials are so awful now.
The halftime show wasn't too bad. I know that Prince put on a technically good performance, but I was never a wild Prince fan. I kept on hoping he'd do "When Doves Cry" because I never liked "Purple Rain."
As for this weekend...I did a little. I have this weenie cold. I can't believe I got sick again so fast. I'm hardly sick, but still-stuffy nose? Weakness? Sore throat? Why do you have to betray me? I worked on my proposal a little and graded papers. I went on a walk today and it was absolutely gorgeous. While this weather is nice, I think I'll try studying outside.
This weekend my hall smelt like a landfill. Someone must have had really rancid garbage.
I'm getting sleepy. I should go to bed early. Blast you, cold.
I was just talking about this movie with my brother the other day. The Chipmunk Adventure is online! I haven't seen this movie since I was at least five or six. I first saw it when I was three or four, and Disney Channel (back when it didn't suck) used to show it all the time. I always cried at the penguin part. This is exciting.
Sure, most sequels stink, but what movie really needs a sequel?
I would say Dumb and Dumber, because I have finally come to terms with the fact that it is one of my favorite movies ever. And nothing like the prequel a couple of years ago, with none of the original actors-just a good, 90 minute sequel with Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels reprising their roles. Unfortunately, Jim Carrey is notorious for never doing the same character twice, so there you go. Eh, it probably would suck anyway, because the Farrelly Brothers really haven't had any good movies since then.
To be facetious, I thought of saying, "TITANIC!" because last week, my brother and I watched this funny "pitch" from Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn to James Cameron for a sequel. You can see that pitch here. You can also see someone else's idea for a sequel here. It is alternately stupid and hilarious.
